At Fen House Dental, Dr Shahin and Dr Pirvu invest in outstanding products to ensure first-class patient care, and the material used for our tooth fillings is no exception.
Patients have the option of super-strong silver (amalgam) fillings, which are ideal for fixing cavities that aren’t in the visible smile line, or, if they prefer, white fillings designed to blend in flawlessly with their existing teeth. Either way, our tooth fillings are designed to protect the tooth, keeping it strong and healthy.

Why would you need a filling?
Dental fillings are used to replace areas of the tooth where the dentist has removed decay (cavities). A tooth filling covers the area, protecting the tooth and stopping further infection. When a filling is made from composite material, it can either be a dental inlay, where the material is inserted into the damaged area of the tooth to protect and add strength, or a dental onlay. An onlay is performed when the dentist needs to cover the entire biting surface of the tooth.
The process of getting a tooth filling at Fen House Dental
Once our team has assessed your case and determined whether a dental filling is the best course of action, treatment for a filling typically takes around 20-30 minutes and remains a comfortable procedure.
- Firstly, the area is numbed with anaesthetic. This creates a more pleasant experience for the patient.
- Next, our dentist will remove any decay.
- Then, they will mix the material (either amalgam or composite) and apply it to the area.
- It’s then left for several minutes to harden before we check for a bite.
- If necessary, part of the filling can be filed to maintain a proper bite.

FAQs
What about aftercare?
Aftercare for dental fillings is straightforward. A healthy diet, regular brushing and flossing, coupled with regular dental check-ups, should be sufficient to maintain your restored tooth.
How long do fillings last?
Naturally, it depends on how well they’re looked after, but as a general rule of thumb, you can expect a good 7-10 years or more.
Can I eat after getting a filling?
Yes, but we would recommend that you wait until any anaesthetic has worn off because you could be at risk of biting your cheek or tongue.
Do tooth fillings hurt?
In a word, no. Localised anaesthetic ensures the procedure remains comfortable. If you are an anxious or phobic patient, we also provide sedation upon request.
