Utter the words ‘root canal’, and it’s enough to make any patient nervous.
Unfortunately, root canal therapy (endodontics) has been given a bad image, not because of the process itself but because of the treatment’s perception.
As a highly trained dentist in Spalding, we want to assure patients that a root canal procedure does not cause discomfort. Instead, it’s designed to get you out of pain. That’s right; root canal treatment is designed to alleviate discomfort quickly, and that’s our promise to you. We’ll do everything we can to stop any pain by performing precision root canal therapy using the latest laser dental technology.
What is root canal treatment?
When a tooth becomes chipped, cracked or damaged, bacteria enter the tooth via the opening and penetrate one or more inner canals (tubules). The canals are designed to connect the tooth root to the surrounding bone, but unfortunately, they also house the majority of nerves and blood vessels. Therefore, when infection takes hold, the nerves send out pain signals, making it incredibly uncomfortable to live with.
The only way to prevent discomfort is to remove the infection from the inner canals and seal the canal. This is what root canal therapy does.
How do dental lasers help?
Introducing dental lasers allows Dr Shahin, Dr Pirvu, and their team to remove all damaged or infected inner tissue. Sometimes, the conventional cleaning process doesn’t always reach all of the tubules, and there is a chance of some bacteria being left behind after sealing.
Dental lasers, on the other hand, penetrate deep into the tooth tubules, removing stubborn bacteria without destroying adjacent healthy tissue. For the patient, this means a faster, more effective treatment with quicker recovery.
Life after root canal treatment – what happens next?
Immediately after treatment, you’ll be out of pain. However, once any anaesthetic has worn off, you may feel some slight tenderness for a few days. This is natural, and unlike pain caused by root canal infection, this discomfort can be easily managed.
After several weeks, Dr Shahin or Dr Pirvu will remove your temporary crown, initially placed to protect the tooth and switch it out for a permanent lifelike crown that blends seamlessly with your smile. Once that’s been done, you’re free to carry on as normal.
