While there is much emphasis placed on teeth, we often forget about our gums.
Yet maintaining gum health is highly important and is the basis for a great-looking smile. At Fen House Dental, we’re proud to use the latest laser technology to ensure optimal patient gum health is restored or maintained.
Our team can treat all manner of gum problems, including gingivitis or mild to advanced periodontal (gum) disease, using minimally invasive laser techniques. The results are speedier and more effective treatments with little or no downtime.
How do lasers help with gum disease treatment?
In mild gum cases (gingivitis), we use lasers to gently eradicate any tartar buildup that cannot be removed by brushing alone. In most cases, this negates the need for dental scalers or scrapers.
In advanced periodontal (gum) disease cases, soft tissue lasers can be used to vaporise unhealthy gum tissue while cauterising any incision. The result is little to no bleeding and no sutures, meaning accelerated healing and faster recovery.
Lasers can also be used to effectively target bacteria lying deep within periodontal pockets while also ensuring that any excessive tissue along the neck of the tooth is removed and the remaining tissue is pulled tight over it, effectively sealing up the space.
What happens If you have gum disease?
Gum disease is surprisingly common. BUPA suggest that 90% of the UK adult population have previously had or currently live with some form of gum disease.
Noticeable signs include:
- Bleeding gums when brushing.
- Tenderness at the gum line.
- Redness rather than a healthy pink colour.
- Gums shrink away from the teeth, giving the tooth a longer appearance.
- Bad breath.
- Loose teeth.
While early stages of gum disease, like gingivitis, typically require a descale to remove tartar buildup and a course of antibiotics, advanced gum disease may require targeted laser treatment or even surgery.
Rest assured that if you have gum problems caused by gum disease, our dedicated team will help you get your smile back on track.
