What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are thin shell-like covers that are permanently attached to the front surface of the teeth. Designed to disguise a wide range of blemishes, staining, cracks and chips, they’re ideal for covering up those little (or large) imperfections that blight an otherwise perfect smile.

Additionally, porcelain veneers can be used to change the appearance of:

  • Slight tooth gaps.
  • Tooth size.
  • Uneven teeth resulting in an instant and outstanding transformation.

Dr Shahin or Dr Pirvu use their years of clinical knowledge to ensure every detail of your veneers looks right, from the exact colour to the shape and length. The result is flawless perfection that looks as natural as the person wearing them.

What are dental composites?

Unlike porcelain veneers, which are attached to the teeth, dental composites consist of a synthetic polymer (material) that is applied to the tooth. After application, the material is left to harden, and once hard, it becomes your tooth’s new surface.

Like veneers, composites can be polished and coloured to blend effortlessly with your existing smile. The difference is that they aren’t as durable or long-lasting as porcelain veneers but cost considerably less.

What can patients expect?

Here’s a step-by-step guide to what you can expect from your veneers treatment here in Spalding:

Step 1 – A smile consultation

During a consultation we’ll talk to you about your smile goals and what you can expect. We’ll also show you some assimilated designs using 3D Smile Design technology so you can quickly see the results you want. Dr Shahin or Dr Pirvu will spend considerable time on these representations to ensure that the assimilations match your desired results. Once these are locked in, we’re ready for the next step.

Step 2 – The procedure

If you are opting for veneers, on the day of the procedure, our dentist may need to remove a tiny slither of tooth enamel so the veneer sits flush within the smile line. If this is the case, a local anaesthetic will be administered. After any preparation, the teeth will be scanned, and the images will be passed over to the lab for veneer creation.

On the contrary, if you opt for dental composite material, it isn’t necessary to remove any part of the tooth, and no impressions need to be taken. Temporary veneers are then prepared and fitted to the surface of the tooth on the same day.

Alternatively, with composites, the synthetic material is mixed and carefully applied to the tooth’s damaged or blemished area. Once the material is hardened, it’s buffed and polished, and you’re ready to go.

Step 3 – Final fitting

After several weeks, your porcelain veneers will be ready. The temporary versions are removed, and your permanent fixtures are attached to the tooth’s front surface. The veneers are then checked for bite and feel. Once everything is okay, you’ll have a brand new smile transformation you can be proud of.

FAQs

What are the main advantages of porcelain veneers?

Preparation for veneers is quick and involves removing very little (if any) of the existing tooth. Moreover, once in place, they can instantly transform a smile. They can be colour-matched to your existing teeth to give a flawless look, and because they’re made of dental porcelain, they’re also resistant to staining.

What are the key differences between dental composites and porcelain veneers?

Veneers are either man-made or digitally designed and 3D milled, whereas composites are made from a synthetic polymer. Composites are more of a quick-fix solution, lasting approximately 5 years, whereas porcelain veneers are designed to be a long-term solution, lasting 15 years or more with proper care.

While composites are applied quickly in one session, veneers typically take several sessions spread over several weeks. As such, the cost for dental composites is considerably less than porcelain veneers.

Who is a good candidate for veneers or composites?

Anyone with stained, chipped or blemished teeth or considering a full smile makeover. Age doesn’t normally play a factor, as we have fitted veneers to many older patients in the past.

Can I whiten my teeth after getting veneers?

Essentially, no! Porcelain veneers don’t respond to teeth whitening treatment like natural teeth, so it’s always best to whiten teeth before undergoing cosmetic dental veneers.
