What is a chrome denture?

A cobalt chrome denture fitted in the upper mouth. Chrome dentures are usually partial dentures or dentures for a single tooth that have a metal framework that supports false teeth. Complete dentures are rarely made from metal. This is because chrome dentures generally require support from your remaining natural teeth to fit securely.

You may be wondering if dentures are more obvious when made from metal. Well, the good news is, they aren’t because they are designed to be unnoticeable when inside the mouth.

This is achieved by the metal structures being lighter, less bulky, and more easily hidden when worn, or in some cases, the metal parts being covered by plastic gum and teeth.

Types of dentures

Immediate dentures

These are full dentures used as a stopgap while the mouth heals from tooth extractions. These dentures are manufactured and fitted to the patient. As the mouth heals and changes, patients will work with their prosthodontist to monitor fit and comfort, while soft re-liners are used as a cushion to improve comfort and promote faster healing and gum conditioning. Some immediate dentures can be re-fitted and relined with soft instead of harder materials for long-term wear.

Full dentures (or complete) dentures

Full dentures replace all the teeth in the mouth and are hard, often acrylic, plates with false teeth attached to them. These dentures fit over the gums and on the upper jaw; the acrylic base can also cover the palate. Full dentures must be removed and cleaned carefully at night.

Snap-in dentures

Snap-in dentures are removable dentures that attach to implant posts in the jaw. These are considered implant-retained dentures and are more stable and comfortable than conventional dentures. This technique also helps maintain bone health in the jaws and makes implant-retained dentures more stable and comfortable than conventional dentures. In the upper jaw, snap-in dentures don’t cover the palate, an advantage for both speech and taste.

Fixed dentures

Fixed dentures rely on implants to hold them in place. One type of fixed denture is the trademarked All-on-4, which typically uses four implant posts and abutments to permanently anchor a full-arch bridge (that’s eight implants total for upper and lower dentures).

A partial removable denture, or a removable bridge, attaches to neighboring teeth with metal hardware that you can unclip yourself. These are typically used for patients who have some missing teeth but do not need full dentures.

Partial fixed denture

A partial fixed denture, also known as a fixed bridge, is anchored to the remaining healthy teeth for support and can fill a gap left by two or three missing teeth. It differs from a partially removable denture because it can only be removed by cutting it off with burs by a dentist.

FAQs

What are the disadvantages of dentures?

It can lead to loss of the remaining teeth and end up with full dentures.

Are dentures comfortable?

Valplast or flexible plastic dentures (partial dentures only) fit snugly against remaining teeth and are a more comfortable and tighter fit.

Do dentures look false?

A full or partial denture does not have to ‘look false’, but retention (tightness) is always an issue, and most denture wearers complain of loose dentures and soreness from time to time.

What do chrome dentures look like?

Chrome dentures have a quite obvious metal framework, with plastic false teeth and gums attached to them. Or, they can look like plastic removable gums and teeth with metal clasps attached.

What is a Valplast denture?

Valplast partial flexible dentures are a comfortable solution to missing teeth. Valplast is a brand of removable flexible partial dentures. They are made from nylon resin that is not only durable but flexible enough to move and adapt to your mouth.

This makes them a lot more comfortable to wear than dentures that are made from hard, unmoving material. However, it does mean that you cannot get Valplast full dentures, as full mouth dentures require some rigidity to stay in place.

Unlike other types of partial dentures, they don’t have uncomfortable metal clasps to keep them in place, which can be visible at times. Instead, they have little projections made from the same nylon resin material that fits over the teeth and gums to help the denture stay in place.

Valplast dentures match your natural teeth and gums better than traditional dentures, although they may be prone to discolouration over time.

Overall, Valplast dentures could be a better choice for you if you are looking to replace one or more teeth. They are strong, lightweight and, aesthetically speaking, blend in well with your remaining natural teeth.
